4D Scanning Techniques

A 4D ultrasound scan gives you the possibility to see your baby in three dimensions and moving in real time while still in the womb. In other words, 4D sonograms give you the chance to see the shape of your baby’s face, how big his arms and legs are, how round his stomach is - and you can even catch him smile, yawn, blink, and suck his fingers. A 4D scan allows you to get to know your baby and bond with him while he’s still developing inside the womb - at no known risk to the mother or baby. Parents who have experienced a 4D ultrasound scan report feeling an extra special bond with their unborn baby. They also receive valuable reassurance and encouragement that everything to do with the baby is progressing as it should.

4D ultrasounds allow you to see your unborn baby in amazingly high detail, usually in a golden colour (as this is the clearest and most aesthetically pleasing) and can confirm the sex of the baby, as well as check for soft tissue anomalies such as a cleft lip or foetal malformation. 4D sonograms can also determine vaginal bleeding in early pregnancy, the viability of the foetus, help localise the placental site and assist with the diagnosis or exclusion of placenta previa. One of the most known about uses of a 4D ultra sound scan is to determine whether you have a multiple pregnancy.

A whole wealth of knowledge is provided by 4D ultrasounds, and if you’re interested to find out more then come along to one of the Baby Shows and talk to some of the exhibitors who offer a 4D baby scan service. They will give you as much information as you need to decide where and when to have one.

If you’re curious about the shape of your baby’s face, keen to make an extra special bond, or simply want to be reassured that everything is progressing normally, a 4D ultrasound scan is a wonderful way to take a glimpse into your baby’s world, check he’s doing fine, and form a deeper emotional connection. The best 4D ultrasounds are obtained when the baby is in a convenient position before he’s too big, and when there is still a good volume of amniotic fluid around him. The most appropriate time is between twenty-six and thirty-two weeks of pregnancy. If your baby is not in a good position for the 4D scan, you may be asked to go for a walk and return in ten minutes to see if he’s moved around to a better position!

4D sonograms are a painless experience and studies show that there is no known risk to the mother or baby. On the contrary, having a 4D ultra sound can significantly reduce parental stress and anxiety, reassuring mothers and fathers to be that baby is developing fine, is comfortable, and growing well in his little inner world.

Come to one of the Baby Shows close to you, and ask how you can take a 4D ultrasound scan and see live action of your baby yawning, blinking, stretching and rubbing his eyes. A truly unforgettable experience!
